Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2022

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a global effort to help everyone stay safe and protected when using technology whenever and however you connect. This month is all about taking action! There are all kinds of ways to stay safe and secure online but even just practicing these cybersecurity basics can make a huge difference: 

Enable Duo Multi-factor Authentication
Create strong passwords with LastPass
Update your devices regularly
Recognize and report phishing


Throughout the month of October, the Information Security Office (ISO) will be hosting events on Thursdays to engage, entertain, and encourage better digital security.

Every Thursday there will be an event hosted by the ISO in the month of October in the Alkek Library in the fourth floor conference rooms (441/442). Pre-registration is not required. Show up for pizza, drinks, and cybersecurity awareness!

Cybersecurity is easy if you...

October 6 – Alkek 441 – 7:00pm-8:30pm 

Get savvy on security. This workshop covers the basic steps to improving your personal security posture. We will discuss how to correctly use a password manager, employ multi-factor authentication, and review your personal cyber hygiene. Covering these few basics will give you the entry-level skills needed to protect yourself online.

Phishing and Cybercrime

October 13 – Alkek 441 – 7:00pm-8:30pm 

The rise of phishing and cybercrime impacts virtually everyone in the digital space. The first and most important thing to know is how to spot phishing and cybercrime, the second is to know what to do when you see it. We will cover real-life examples of phishing and social engineering that have led to the loss of money, identity, and reputation. We will teach you how to avoid becoming a victim.

October 20 – Alkek 441 – 7:00pm – 8:30pm
